Board Training Program Aims to Help Nonprofits Increase Board Diversity

April 22, 2024 (Racine, WI) — United Way of Racine County has launched United Horizons Board Training Program to help prepare community members to serve on nonprofit boards and help nonprofit organizations build boards that are representative of our community.

The program has two tracks, one for individuals seeking to serve on a nonprofit board and one for representatives of nonprofit organizations. The program will conclude with a “matchmaking” session, where participants will meet representatives of the nonprofit organizations.

“Boards play a critical role in nonprofit organizations and the most effective boards have a culture of inclusion, respect and trust,” said Katie Tuttle, special projects manager at United Way of Racine County. “We hope this program can help bring together those people who want to serve and the organizations that are seeking a board that is representative of Racine County.”

Recruitment for the program will emphasize participants from populations that are historically underrepresented on organizations board, such as people of color, people in the LGBTQ+ community, people with lived experience in poverty and people from rural communities. Anyone can apply, but preference may be given to people from those communities.

The first session for individual participants is May 21, and the first session for organizations is May 23. Complete schedules, more information and link to the application forms can be found at unitedwayracine.org/boardtraining. Priority will be given to those who apply by May 8.

United Horizons is made possible by a grant from the Volunteer Generation Fund in partnership with AmeriCorps and Serve Wisconsin.
