United Way's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program has been instrumental in helping low-to-moderate income and limited English-speaking Racine County residents receive free access to their earned tax refund. This incredible work is made possible due to the commitment of local volunteers. Before directly working with taxes, volunteers undergo a background check, intensive training and must pass an IRS-certification exam. All of this effort is worth it for VITA volunteers who get to see their impact first-hand.
One volunteer explained how she has seen the program’s effect on clients.
“I see the difference I make every time I work with a new client, where I can help people with a low income receive a big return,” she said.
Another volunteer described the first moment she knew her work was making an impact.
"The look of joy on the client’s face after they went through the quality check," she said.
VITA will continue to serve clients for the remainder of the 2023 tax season. Individuals in need of tax assistance are encouraged to schedule an appointment.
