Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is a national program staffed by local volunteers that provides free preparation and electronic filing of tax returns. Our volunteers help Racine County residents file taxes through VITA.
Anticipated sites for 2025 that will need volunteers:
Racine sites
Racine Workforce Solutions - Mondays, 1 - 7pm
Racine Public Library - Tuesdays, 10am - 2pm and Thursdays, 2 - 7pm (2-4pm Spanish service site)
RUSD Community Pathways Campus - Wednesdays, 1 - 7pm
George Bray YMCA Branch - Fridays, 9am - Noon
Case High School - Saturdays, 9am - 1pm
Burlington site
Burlington Public Library - Tuesdays, Noon - 3pm
Tax Certified Roles
Tax preparers interview the taxpayers and prepare the tax return.
Quality reviewers provide a double check of every tax return prepared and review the finished return with the taxpayer. They help to ensure accuracy.
Student support specialists support Case High School student volunteer tax preparers through the process of preparing returns to ensure their success.
Intake specialists interview the taxpayers and review documents during drop-off process to ensure we have everything we need to prepare the return at a later time.
Non-Tax Certified Roles
Greeters welcome tax filers to the VITA site and make sure that tax filers have all the information needed to complete their tax returns.
Bilingual interpreters work alongside clients and preparers to interpret their conversations.
- In the application, you will select if you want to obtain tax certification or not. After training and certification, you will be able to select your volunteer location and specific role.
- No experience is required. All training is provided. Flexible schedules are available, including weekdays, evenings and weekends. A commitment of one two-to-four-hour shift per week is required during tax season, January through April.
- Virtual orientation is required for all volunteers. After applying, you will receive an email with the days, times and link to attend. Orientations are held weekly starting the week of November 4, 2024.
- All volunteers are required to submit and pass a background check before volunteering at a site.
